Guest damo
Hi All, This is my first post, here goes...... I am a bricklayer with a young family. We are (hopefully) about to get our 175 visa granted. What areas are best to live in where I can find work? We quite fancy Redcliffe but are totally open to suggestions. Any help would be great as we haven't been to Oz before and can't afford a reccie trip. Cheers! Damien

Guest Geordieboy
Hey Damien We moved to Adelaide 3 years ago, had enough of it and moved to the Gold Coast in November 08. It is more what you expect Oz to be like, good beaches , endless things to do although the humidity takes some getting used to. My wife got work no probs, she's a social worker, nurses and things like that seem to be no prob. I am into property, I was a Chartered Surveyor (before that a brickie) into valuation and all things real estate.............still not got a job. My mate from Leeds is just finding his feet as a joiner after moving to the Gold Coast / Brisbane last May from Adelaide. You have to be prepared to struggle at first and there are plenty of times you think fxck this I'm going back to the UK. However, is it not better being unemployed in the sun than dreary England!! We live in Ormeau, a newish town just off the main motorway and trainline. Some 40 mins to Brisbane and some 20 mins to Surfers Paradise, the main Australian holiday destination, and some 10 mins from the theme parks. Being on the motorway and main trainline means easy accesibility to all areas, plus a few poms live here. Curries and chippies are ****, being from Newcastle the pubs are not that clever either.........not if you are still into big nights on the town, I'm getting over that now. It is far better for kids here, loads of sporting clubs and no street corners outside the local off license like England. Sorry I cannot be more helpfull but good luck, you have to give it a try or otherwise you will always wonder....what if. If you require any more info and I can help no probs. Oh by the way, the economic downturn here is nowhere near as bad as the Uk.......yet.
Guest damo
Hi Geordieboy, Wow, thanks for your reply, more info than I can get out of my cousin who's a painter/decorator in Albnay Creek! We are definitaley coming out as soon as our visa is granted, like you say we'll regret it if we don't try and we are gonna rent our house out so will have something to come back to if we really need to. Gotta try tho! If I can't do bricklaying I'm willing to shovel sh*t just to get started! I'm not worried what I do as long as the mrs and especially the kids have a better way of life. At the mo I go to work, come home knackered, it's cold, I don't see the kids then put them to bed and repeat...... The only thing I look forward to is a bloody good curry and a beer at the weekend, oh bugger just read your bit about this. anyway I'm sure the fishing will be good:) Damien

If you have that way of thinking here, you`ll do great! its about a better quality of life and not always about the money! I have been here 4 years and have a much better quality of life. Not sure if you still log in but you mention your wife is a Social Worker as I am too and I'm currently torn between Adelaide and Brisbane areas to apply to for sponsorship. Any advice regarding the demand for Welfare Workers (not reg. as a Social Worker) in the Queensland area? Would really appreciate any advice really! Thanks. Julie

Julie  Hi Julie, I'm in bracken ridge, brizzy, and love it. Plenty of work up here in hospitals and Department of Child Safety (I'm an ex fosterer) but as in the UK, that department seems to burn it's workers out. My ex d-i-l has just come over and although she has been employed for a number of years in the UK as a team leader in disability learning support, she is struggling to find work here as nearly all applications for social work, allied health etc require degree status Do you need sponsorship or can you come without? I've met quite a few who came sponsored and then baled out of the sponsorship 'cause they found better work. Don't let sponsors fool you, if they say that you are tied to them. Once here, you can leave their employ just as long as you have another in the same line of work to go to. kev
Guest Australiadog
Hi Kev Good to hear from you and thanks for the tips regarding the sponsored employment angle. I too find it frustrating that my qualificaiton in the UK is classed as a SW one but not in Oz - makes you feel so skilled! I'm using a registered migration consultant to assist with the process of applying and she has advised that the sponsorship visa is the only route I can take. I've only got distant relations around Brisbane who wouldn't qualify as sponsors sadly. At least it is good to hear there are opportunities out there, even though it might take a few attempts!
