Yesterday thousands of Australian and New Zealand expats gathered for the 5am ANZAC Day ceremony at London’s Hyde Park Corner, that this year took place at the New Zealand memorial at Wellington Arch (the ceremony alternates between Australia’s and New Zealand’s London memorials each year).

It was on this day exactly 100 years ago that Australian and New Zealand soldiers marched along the streets of London to Westminster Abbey, for the first ANZAC Day service in 1916. Thousands of Britons turned out to honour them in a display of thanksgiving, common history, and friendship.

Many things may have changed in 100 years, but here in London, you could feel that same spirit stronger than ever, as Aussies, Kiwis and Londoners alike came out in their droves yesterday to pay their respects.
