Moving to Cairns

Hello!

We are moving to Cairns next month and need help on an area.

DH will be working in Mossman, however we don't want to live there. We want beach. Family friendly. Local sports for my kids. Decent primary school.

We are debating between Port Douglas (shorter commute for DH), or somewhere like Trinity Beach. Port Douglas might become cumbersome having to drive South for things like sports etc? I will be getting a job at some point also, but hard to say where.

Where would you live?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Lived in Cairns a number of years now and love it. It's going to be a tough one though with your OH working in Mossman. Personally for your sake and knowing he has to do the commute on a daily basis I would look at Port Douglas. It wouldn't be my first choice BUT come wet season the road from the beaches up to PD usually gets blocked with landslides, crashes etc, plus you have to contend with the tourists going 40km whilst they look at the beautiful scenery.

Don't get me wrong PD is absolutely stunning and I could live there tomorrow it just limits you to your choice of school. In fact I would probably look at going to Mossman State School if that is an option. Is your husband going to be working at the hospital there?

thanks for the reply!

He is a paramedic and will be stationed at Mossman until we can transfer somewhere else.

i appreciate your thoughts. I guess we will look at Port Douglas. I was thinking Port Douglas State School. Is that not any good?

yes PD State isn't bad. Like I said you could look at the beaches but I know a few who have ended up moving because the commute is a killer not as in the number of cars but a variety of factors, landslides, crashes, tourists etc. Mind you it's a beautiful road to travel on.

I'm just worried we will end up commuting south for the kids extra curricular activities etc if there isn't enough in PD.

and then I could possibly be commuting down there for work.

My degree is marketing and management, so fairly generic and leaves me open for different jobs.

My kids will probably do soccer, tball or athletics and/or karate.

Re your employment you could look at working in the tourist industry, there are quite a few large hotel complexes up in PD where they advertise for marketing managers, in fact we sold a car last year to a lovely Indian Couple who had been sponsored in a similar role.

Sports, not sure about TBall but they have a karate club. I agree though you are going to have a lot more options if you move to the NB (Northern Beaches) you just need to make sure hubby is aware that some days he may be delayed in his commute.

One of the PIO members has just moved from PD to Yorkeys Knob because he is a pilot and he kept getting stranded.

If you do make the move down to NB then for Karate Clubs I would recommend Matsumoto and go to the main den to be taught by sensei himself, he is very strict though BUT he is the best there is. http://www.matsumotokarate.com/

School wise you could look at St Andrews as they have a school bus from the NB straight to the school or even look at TAS, Redlynch also has the home of the largest Futsal stadium http://www.redlynchcentralsports.com.au

Hello

We ended up in Port Douglas. We started my child in the State School, but moving him and his prep brother to a catholic school in Mossman next year.

We like Port Douglas for the most part and not much commuting involved for my dh.

Thanks for checking in and your advice!

How are you coping with the heat? Unfortunately we have hit wet/cyclone season now although the real humidity doesn't kick in until Jan/Feb. Once we reach May the weather is perfect, no humidity, no rain and 25 degrees every day.

How are you coping with the homesickness? It can be hard at first especially with Christmas around the corner but hang in there as it does get better.

It is hot. We have a huge adjustment as we moved from USA. We are more tired from the heat and not really productive because of it.

I am heading down to Sydney for Xmas with my family. Will be there for a month.

I'm horribly home sick for USA, but we are still in the post move turmoil and hopefully things get easier.

Not sure what our long term plans are...

It is hot but you do get use to it. We came up from Melbourne which we found freezing. We have now acclimatised although like I say the worst of the humidity is yet to come but thankfully it doesn't last long.

It is hard making the move to a new country and adjusting, the first 6 months are the hardest.

I'm so glad you have family to go to for Christmas, that will be lovely. I love visiting Sydney, I couldn't live there, its too cold lol. So you will be there for the NYE fireworks, wow, I'm jealous
