Guest cal
LOL, There really isnt that many 'to avoid' areas, and the ones that are less desirable are no where near the same as Moss side etc ,some have a low crime rate but are very industrial so not ideal for family living ,others do have a slightly higher crime rate especially after dark. Off the top of my head areas classed as less desirable in and around Brisbane include - Woodridge Kingston Logan Central Wacol Inala Rocklea Hope this helps Cal x
Guest Joanne Washington-Hough
Hi, We're located near Guildford in the UK & looking for a good family area within 1 hour's commute to the CBD that might be comparable to what we have here,ie safe, good area for schools, good transport links to the city, safe for our young children to play out. Any suggestions please. We've heard there's a bit of a north/south divide in Brisbane. Oh, & we're restricted by our visa so Greater metropolitan & Gold coast are both out! Jo. Guest cal
Am i right in thinking you then have to settle in a 'regional area'? If so (and i know this will sound confusing) some of the regional areas that were on the list when i last looked really arent too far from the city or beaches, of course some were miles from nowhere but there were quite a few lovely places on there with good commuting distances to Brisbane,GC or SC. We are 40 mins from the city or 45 mins from the beaches of the Gold Coast and were on the list, as was Pacific Pines which is a massive estate on the Gold Coast (hinterland side) and home to lots and lots of english familys. Do you have access to a recent regional postcode list? or could you post it on here? If you do need to reley on public transport you need to choose an area very carefully. Public transport is pretty good inner city but once you get to the outter suburbs or further, its a little hit and miss (if there at all), this is because lots of the now populated areas have only boomed in the last few years and they hadnt previously got the need or population for a bus or train route/link, hence most familys have a couple of cars. What occupations would you be looking to work in? This may dictate where roughly you need to be heading. Cal x

Not really sure whether the bayside area of Brissy would come under the greater metropolitan area? Just let me know if it's a possibility as I can then let you have more info on our surrounding suburbs
Guest Mark and Jo
Have been in Brisbane for over 6 years. Inala, Darra and logan would top my undesirable list!

Any ideas? My husband will be looking for a job in ICT sales management so we guess that access to the CBD will be crucial. One hour by car would be ok. Thankyou for you time. Jo. Hi Jo We moved from Fleet, so not too far from where you are moving from.....so did Myrtle who has posted....although we didn't know each other then!!! We both ended up in the Bayside area. Myrtle is in the Manly area and I am a little further south in Thornlands. Why do you have such a restriction on postcodes? Looking at the list, Manly would not be on it, but Thornlands would.......Manly is 4179 and Thornlands is 4164.... My husband is also in the saleish sade of IT! Anyway, have a look at places like Birkdale, Thorneside, Wellington Point, Ormiston, Cleveland, Thornlands, Victoria Point and Redland Bay. All within the 1 hour cummute distance into the city and all fall within the postcodes you have listed. Love Rudi x

Hiya Jo There are some lovely areas in those postcodes zone, most that would give you less than an hours commute to the city. Alot of it would depend on if you wanted to be A- Near the sea with easy access to the beach or near the greenery hinterland, rainforest, etc B- Would you prefer estate style 'suburban' living or a more spread out acerage feel. Alot of the areas not far from here are listed, none to bad and most family orientated, some subruban estates(4118) ,some semi rural acerage places (4124). Here you are approx 45 mins from either the Gold Coast or Brisbane Ciity, with Ipswich also only around 35 mins away. There are also some areas near Redcliffe (4019)which has a nice beach and lovely waterfront, but is directly below the sunshine coast so also ives access to the lovely beaches up there to. Commuting to Brisbane city isnt to bad from here either. The only one i wouldnt personally want to move to would be the 4114 Kingston (logan central area) You might find this site useful to see the location of the areas - Postcode 4118 - Queensland (near Brisbane) - Postcodes Australia Hope this helps a bit Cal x

Guest Rudi
Thanks Rudi, small world isn't it? How does Brisbane compare to your old life in Fleet? Jo.x Life here is Brisbane is very different to Fleet! Certainly life is busier now, but equally in a more laid back way. Busier I guess because we now have 3 children, not 2, and now they are older and involved of lots of activities it keeps us on our toes. We love our lifestyle over here, being close to the water. We live on acreage and love that too, rather than the modern estate living we had in Fleet. Take care Love Rudi x
Guest Seabird
The Gap and Chapel Hill My wife and I are 30 years old with 2 young children. When looking for somewhere to live is there anywhere we should avoid. Brisbane's moss side or bronx??? :err: Moved to The Gap. Amazingly awesome and tropical bushland and hills surround us. Love it. On the edge of a huge reserve (Brisbane Forest Park), river 50 m from front door, amazing wildlife, surroundings awesome (lived in West Humble, and this is better than Box Hill!!), not particularly cheap or close to beach, but 20 minutes off peak drive to CBD. If you get somewhere with a pool, then you don't need to get to the beach so often and don't get bitten by jellyfish.. Bus route is excellent - every 10 to 15 minutes - thanks to T2 lane, takes around 45 - 50 minutes door to door inclusive of 10 minute woodland walk to bus. Chapel Hill pretty tasty too - other side of Mount Cootha, but pricey again. Road into city from Chapel Hill goes through Indooroopilly, so gets heavily congested during rush hour. If you like Surrey these suburbs would fit the bill. Indooroopilly has large shopping mall if this is important for you, and only around 5 to 10 minutes from Chapel Hill. Not sure about transport from here, may have to head to Indooroopilly first, then 10 minutes on train into CBD. Mitchelton "up and coming" may buy there in the end if I can face leaving The Gap... The Gap is prone to winds, had a phenomenal 1 in 50 year storm in 2008 - see it on You tube. Nicest place I've lived so far since arriving in OZ five years ago and pretty convenient for city. Nearest shopping centre is at The Gap, but no malls close by, closest is probably Brookside, around 15 minutes drive. Shops okay at Keperra too that's around 10 minutes drive away. Guest fluxsta
Hiya, We are in West Byfleet and i used to live in Guildford. Spolit for choice in Surrey, but it seems that many suburbs are great for families served by public transport. We are over September so are currently looking into areas that may suit for our young family. Our heads are going ot explode at present and we are still getting our heads around the fact that we have secured employment and are actually doing the move!!!!
